Introduction

The Institute of Medicine (IOM), established in 1972 under Tribhuvan University, stands as the pioneering institution for medical education, research, and health service development in Nepal. Conceived with the vision of producing competent health professionals to meet the nation’s growing healthcare needs, IOM has evolved into a center of excellence in medical and allied sciences.

Located at Maharajgunj, Kathmandu, IOM began its journey with the training of middle-level health workers and gradually expanded to offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs in medicine, nursing, public health, dentistry, pharmacy, and allied disciplines. The institute encompasses several constituent campuses and a wide network of affiliated colleges across the country, ensuring equitable access to quality medical education.

IOM is also a leading hub for biomedical research in Nepal, addressing national health priorities through evidence-based studies and policy-oriented projects. Its central teaching hospital—Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH)—serves as a major referral center providing comprehensive health services while offering practical learning experiences to students.
